No parent should have to worry about whether or not they are safe on the bus ride to school. A lot of times, the rules aren’t enforced very well because of the fact that the bus driver must focus on the road, and can’t focus on all of the children at the same time. This is why it is a parents duty to teach your kids a proper, and safe way of boarding, and exiting the bus.
1. Walk with kids to the bus stop, and boarding the bus
It is important to walk with your children to the bus stop when they are young. This is so you will have the time to teach them the proper do’s and dont’s of waiting for the bus, and also speak with them about proper etiquette on the bus.
At this time, you can educate them to take safety measures such as taking three giant steps back from the curb when waiting for the bus to arrive, and only walking up towards the bus once it has come to a complete stop.
2. Getting off the bus
When your child is getting off the bus, they should be instructed to use the handrail while stepping off of the bus. Then, if they must cross the street once they get off the bus, they should then coordinate with the bus driver and only cross when the bus driver tells them that it is safe to do so. This, paired with teaching children to look left, and then right while crossing the street will give them less chance of being in harm’s way.
3. Be considerate of school zones and bus stops
Bus stops and school zones should not be ignored, as there is the possibility that the children could be nearby. It is important to reduce your speed to the school zone speed, and stop whenever a bus has stopped. You should make no attempt to drive around the bus. Flashing yellow lights mean that the bus has stopped while flashing red lights means that the bus has stopped.
Overall, these are some of the steps you can follow in attempts to keep your children safe and sound.
